A recollection…the comfort sisters of San Diego

It was May 2002 and I had to work a convention about 2,500 miles away in San Francisco and I don’t like to fly. Thankfully I had a very understanding and compassionate boss who allowed me to take the train instead, because you see I am one of those people who have that irrational fear of flying. My boss provided me with a couple of extra travel days so I was able to take the Amtrak Sunset Limited out west instead of the Delta is ready when you are thing that flies through the air. I gladly drove the 7 hours to New Orleans from Atlanta to save a travel day since the Sunset Limited is only a 3x a week train but being a serious rail fan I would have driven many more hours if it meant avoi ...

Planting a Garden - Part 1

The Garden Part 1:
After many talks we decided to plant a garden this year.  The first step, as simple as it seems, often is the one most overlooked.  Where to put it?  We studied various parts of our yard at the morning, mid-day, afternoon, and evening to see how much sun it received at each time.  Ideally we were looking for a location that gave morning and afternoon soon while being a little shady at mid-day.  Once we settled on the spot we had an area of around 40 feet x 20 feet tilled up.  We tilled it and then let it sit for a week and then tilled it again.
Now that the ground was ready we made a trip to our local Home Depot store to pick out plant ...

Chili Cook-off at Dill's in Royston

If you missed it then you missed out.  The Chili cook-off at Dill’s in Royston this past Friday, 8 March, was the place to be.  With a $250 cash prize for the best chili!  Chili is amazing in that each recipe can contain basically the same ingredients but come out tasting distinctly different.  Most of us when we hear the word “Chili” we think those little packets they sell on the baking aisle.  Let me assure you that this was not the case with the contestants here.
Contestants were able to bring their slow cookers packed with their best recipe and allow judges and shoppers a sample of each.  I admit I took a few samples!  Contestants als ...

The News Today

If you are a follower of current events you are probably spending a lot of time shaking you head wondering what is going on in the world.  Sometimes it feels like the United States is a foreign land as the politics get more and more polarized.  Is there something more going on? Are we all on borrowed time, the world was slated to end last December wasn’t it?
We have almost have 17 trillion dollars in debt and most of this is owned by China.  The government is being sequestered but it appears it is business as usual for Congress.  It just seems all out of control to me.  We supposedly are cutting back on all this domestic spending but we are giving hundreds of ...

Who is teaching our children?

One in four teenage girls in the U.S. has an STD, according to the Centers for Disease Control.  In Proverbs 22:6 we are told to Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.  What happens when the world is the one doing the training?  I would say that when the world trains our children the things we see every day are the expected results.  We all know a story about that one troubled youth.  The one that comes from a broken home, the one that gets into fights at school, the one that is always in trouble for lying.  We all know this youth.
Training a child is far more than just talking to him or her about life.  Don&rsq ...

Happy New Year From NEGA Direct

Well, 2012 came and went with barely a whimper.  Seems like everyone was wrapped up in the thought that maybe the Mayan’s were right and the world would just cease to exist.  With all the bad news that came right there at the end it almost seemed possible.  In the end though, time just kept marching on and here we are in 2013!
I know I, like most of us, have things I want to accomplish this coming year.  2013 is before us with all the opportunities waiting to be discovered.  All we have to do is go and get them!  I love the New Year, that feeling of freshness and the idea that we have a clean plate, the old is gone and the new is here!  It remi ...
